Reverse Canvas Tools and Supplies I Used For This Project
When looking to decorate Miranda the Avion (especially wall décor) I knew I had to think lightweight and something that could be hung up with command strips.
On Pinterest I had seen several tutorials for making what is called a reverse canvas. I had never used this method before -- typically Maddie and I use stencil vinyl and then paint our signs directly on wood. But for hanging in the camper I figured a canvas would be more lightweight versus a solid wood sign.
Below I will tell you how I made my signs using my Silhouette Cameo and Heat Transfer Vinyl. Since I am not the best at taking pictures and creating a step by step tutorial I will also share a link to a great tutorial by the Silhouette School.
First I started off by buying a pack of canvases from Michael's. Why a pack if I only needed 2? Well for starters Maddie and I are always crafting and this pack breaks down to a little over a $1 a canvas which is cheaper than buying them separately. Secondly - when you remove the canvas not all frames are pretty --- learned this one out the hard way one time -- so I purchased extra in case I got a disfigured frame.
So I have my canvas now what?
The hard way to removed the canvas is to pull out all the staples..... or you can take a utility knife and cut the canvas close to the staples so that you are removing the canvas from the frame.
Once you have the canvas removed you will want to stain or paint your frame. I of course used my go to stain color of Early American.

On the right is what the frame will look like before staining. |
After I had both frames stained it was time to decide what I wanted on them. I knew that both of these were going to go in the dinette area so I wanted something simple... farm house style.... and camping/travel themed.
Easy Peasy right?!
As an
Etsy Seller I love to support other Etsy shops when I have a chance! So it was a no brainer on where to go look for an SVG file I could use with my Silhouette Cameo. In my search I found two that I loved and thought would go good with Miranda The Avion's theme.
Now I am going to skip ahead because if you have a vinyl machine you know what to do next....
Once I had my design pressed onto my canvas I attached the canvas to the frame by using my
hot glue gun.
<----- to the left is what my canvas look like after I pressed my design on. Notice the edge are not so pretty. In fact it looks like a hot mess! But don't worry I promise that is ok and that you will not see the mess one you have it attached to your frame.
To attach the canvas to the frame line it up. This part was hard for me because I can't seem to ever get anything straight! Once your canvas is glued to the frame you may have some access canvas hanging off the frame. I let the glue dry and then used my utility knife to trim down anywhere that needed it.
Now that I was done it was time to hang my signs up in Miranda the Avion using
Command Strips. I was super pleased with how this project turned out. And think they add a nice touch in our dining area.
